Local Hero

Directed by Bill Forsyth and starring Burt Lancaster, Peter Riegert, Fulton Mackay, Jenny Seagrove and Denis Lawson, Local Hero was released in 1983.

Centred around and partially filmed in Pennan, the film told the story of an American oil company representative who is sent to the fictional village of Ferness, to purchase it and the surrounding land, for his company.

The film has gained a cult following over the years. Mark Kermode the acclaimed British film critic cites it as one of his favourite films of all time. Tourists from all corners are still attracted to the village for this reason and to get a picture of the iconic red phone box, and the harbour, which feature in the film.
